Let’s dive into this week’s collection of fun family-friendly events right here in Beijing.

As always, click the link in the event title or scan the QR codes for further details and ticketing info.

Sat, Jul 3

Gourmet Dumplings Cooking Class

Mao Zedong uttered many famous quotes, but this one might be our favorite: An “upright dumpling makes a woman’s heart tremble,” meaning that a dumpling able to stand up and hold its shape reflects the upright character of its creator. If you feel ready to put your character to the test, this weekend, The Hutong is hosting a gourmet dumpling cooking class, in which you’ll learn how to make delicious jiaozi from scratch. This class isn’t suitable for very little children, as it requires some knife skills and folding jiaozi can be quite fiddly, but if your kids are already getting comfortable in the kitchen this makes for a wonderful family activity.

10.30am. The Hutong. RMB 350.

Sun, Jul 4

Inn Creative Summer Fair

Still looking for ideas to keep you and the kids busy this summer? Head down to the International Newcomers Network (INN) fair this weekend to check out your options. A range of art organizations, galleries, and studios will be in attendance, and INN has arranged a host of fun activities and games to keep you all entertained. Best of all, kids under 12 get in free.

12-3pm. Capital Mansion Athletic Center. RMB 60, kids under 12 free.

AmCham China July 4th Independence Day Party

To all our American readers, Happy 4th of July! This Sunday the American Chamber of Commerce is hosting a super fun Independence Day party, at the lovely outdoor East garden at the Kempinski Hotel. Of course, you don’t need to be from the US to enjoy this party, as there’s something for everyone. Adults can enjoy the free-flow bar while everyone indulges in a buffet meal, plus live music, raffles, and plenty of kids’ activities.

4-8pm. East Garden, Kempinksi Hotel. RMB 550, RMB 250 kids, kids under 6 free.

Save the Date…

Youth Photography Project of Peking Opera: Three Shadows & CAT is coming on Jul 11, giving your kids a great opportunity to learn about both photography and traditional Peking opera from the pros.

Beijing Hikers will be heading out to the White River on Jul 24. This is a very popular hike year-round (think shady picnics and cooling off in fresh water) and great for kids.

And don’t forget about these ongoing events and exhibitions…

Mars 2035 Immersive Science & Art Exhibition (ends Aug 31). If you’ve ever wanted to discover the red planet for yourself, now’s your chance at this great interactive exhibition.

Miyazaki Hayao and Ghibli’s World Animation Art Exhibition (ends Oct 10). Kids absolutely love the rich and magical world of Studio Ghibli animations, and this exhibition gives them a chance to experience it all up close and in person!

2021 Beijing International Light Festival (ends Oct 10). Pretty lights, lasers, stunning displays…this is one nighttime event worth keeping the kids up for.
