Beijing’s an urban jungle, and in any jungle, we need tools to survive and thrive. As urban jungle dwellers, we’ve managed to blend practicality with style, resulting in the modern bag. Here, form meets function, and what looks stylish and fashionable on the outside contains all our essential survival tools on the inside. Inspired by this, we ask expats each week, “What’s in your bag?” and get insights into which essentials they keep on hand when out and about in the capital city.
After we read all about Allison Tichelaar’s story and visited her online jewelry shop this week, we were so impressed that we just had to ask this stylish 16-year-old, What’s In Your Bag?
My name is Alison Tichelaar, I am 16 years old, this is my sixth year living in China and I love it! I was born in the USA, but my family background is from Spain, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. I like travelling, running, learning languages, cooking, watching TV shows and learning how to run my jewellery business “Alit”. I started my business at the end of May this year and I am really enjoying all aspects of it, it is definitely a fun experience!
My favorite bag would have to be this one. I usually don’t like carrying big bags and I think this one is the perfect size for me. It’s big enough to fit all my items but also easy to carry. I love the simplicity of it and the fact that it’s all black makes it easy to style it with any outfit. Inside it also has some pockets which make organizing and finding items really easy. Because of this, I can use this bag for any occasion, whether I am going to a friend’s house, to the city, or to the gym it is always my go-to choice.
The first item I always carry is my metro transportation card. I love to go to the city, and I think using transportation like the metro is both convenient and good for the environment. It is always useful to carry this card with me as I never know when I will need it.
My second item is hand sanitizer, I always carry this with me to use after having gone on the metro or before eating. Especially with Covid-19, I think it’s important to always bring this as well as a mask.
The third item that I like to have with me is my air pods. I love listening to music in the morning or when I have some spare time. When I go out, I make sure to always carry them with me.
My fourth item is a thin jacket in my bag, I have learned to always bring this with me, especially in the summer, as malls and restaurants are usually cold because of the air conditioning.
Finally, my essential item to carry is lip balm. Especially in the colder months, lip balm is very handy.
