A month or so ago, the screen of my laptop started flickering and then it just went black. I mean, it was bound to happen with my machine being a thousand years old, but still, when it happened I had something resembling a meltdown – an adult version of a toddler’s tantrum.

With lockdowns and temporary closures of businesses, it was really difficult finding a repair shop that would take my laptop and have it repaired “by yesterday.” I spent the whole day going through my contacts, asking for recommendations and contacting people who I hoped would be willing to tackle the problem. I actually found quite a few – they all speak English so communication was easy-breezy – and I thought I’d share my findings with you in case your machine needs a healing hand.

Kevin IT Service

Kevin’s shop is in Shunyi, at River Garden, and it’s open 10am-7pm. He doesn’t take days off, so you can call or WeChat him anytime. Even though he’s based in Shunyi, Kevin also makes house calls to all parts of Beijing, so in the event that businesses get shut down again he can offer onsite repair service. Prices vary, but just to give you an idea, the software maintenance fee is around RMB 300.

HiKUN Electronics Mall

Frank has been running his electronics store in Haidian for more than ten years. Almost all of his customers are expats from all over China. His shop is open every day 12:pm-8pm and offers repair services for laptops and phones. There is no standard rate for a laptop repair, as cost varies depending on the specific issue, however, Frank says that the most common problems people come to him about are screen issues and water damage.

Other than IT repair services, Frank’s shop also sells new and secondhand laptops and phones. The electronics mall is located in Zhongguancun Hi-tech Zone. To get to the shop, go to the north gate and take elevator 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 or 9 to the 12th floor and find room 1225A.

Ali’s shop is located in Ritan International Trade Center.  You can add his WeChat (ID: Ali0708) and ask for his opinion, or, better yet, just head over there and let him take a look. Go to block A and find room 1V68. The shop is open 9.30am-5.20pm. As for the price, it varies depending on the issue.
