The Ultimate Sweet Tooth Satisfaction at CityWalk's Toothsome
Universal Studio is reopening this weekend and while the park and rides are great, my mind drifted to all the sweets there, and I couldn’t stop thinking of the late dinner at Toothsome Chocolate Emporium.
Located on the glittery CityWalk Avenue, you can easily recognize this restaurant. Its wacky, colorful façade of black and gold makes it stand out from the other stores.
Unlike a few other recognizable restaurant brands, this one is an original Universal concept which means that you can only find the Toothsome Chocolate Emporium at the Universal CityWalk in Beijing. Pretty unique, huh?
It is decorated with the nineteenth-century theme in mind, and even the waiters and waitresses are dressed up to compliment the atmosphere.
It is separated into a chocolate store and a restaurant. The store sells an assortment of chocolate treats, chocolate bars, and drinks, whereas the restaurant has many meal options like burgers or soups. Yet, it is their desserts that I find the best.
According to the Toothsome team, they serve typical western cuisines like burgers, kinds of pasta, and flatbreads. But in order to accommodate different guests, they also serve some Chinese-inspired dishes like the “Tour de China burger” and “Gong Bao Shrimp”, a spin-off to the classic chicken dish. However, these dishes are probably new because I didn’t see them on the menu when I went there before. But then again, I’ve got a major sweet tooth and I went there for some serious face-to-face time with their desserts.
Although they are especially known for their lavish and decadent desserts (yum!), they also serve some other signature dishes like Chocolate Almond Bread, Crispy Chocolate Chicken Wings (yeah, it’s a real thing!), Toothsome Signature Beef Tenderloin, and Toothsome Too Chocolate Sparkling Cola.
They also have an alcoholic drink called Too Chocolate Stout. Yet, their most iconic dessert items since the day they opened have got to be their shakes. The most popular item on the menu is the Chocolate X5 milkshake.
As of the moment, they don’t have dairy-free options for their milkshakes, but they can remove any dairy products present in their other dishes upon request.
I think they are perfect for families because they have high-chairs and plastic silverware for children. But they are also great for adults because they have a second-floor outdoor dining area where you can enjoy a view of CityWalk and eat your year’s worth of sugar intake
I went to the restaurant after going to Universal. Although I wasn’t hungry and it was 10 pm, as soon as I saw the menu, I knew I had to try the mouth-watering foods.
We ordered their berry waffles (RMB 88) which were served cold with frozen berries, whip cream, and a side of maple syrup; and their chocolate caramelized banana crepes (RMB 78). Both dishes were absolutely delicious, but the portions were rather big, so if you have a small appetite, I would recommend sharing them with other people.
Along with the good food, they also played nice upbeat jazz music that perfectly matched the atmosphere of the restaurant.
Overall, it was a good choice as our last stop for the day. And since it’s free to enter Universal Citywalk, you can definitely check them out without purchasing a ticket to Universal.
Next time, I will definitely order their milkshakes!
