It’s Never Too Late for Tiger Parents to Learn Piano

For those of us who lacked tiger parents to force us into activities at a young age, we may sometimes feel as if we are falling behind. It’s a common assumption that to be “good” at anything, one must begin at a young age. Music is one of those examples.

There are countless stories of tiger parents, particularly Asian parents, who start their children on piano and violin lessons as soon as they come out of the womb. Now, these children are masters of the craft, playing on grand stages and passing examinations with distinction – all at a very young age.

“Child prodigies” have been a hot topic in modern society, with many condemning the extreme parenting used to raise these children, while some silently wish they could also have the skills of those a third of their age. It is not surprising that many believe that past a certain age, whether in their teens or adulthood, they will have lost their chance at becoming truly “good” at anything. However, this is not the case.

Playing the piano is a good example of a hobby one can take up at almost any age. True mastery only requires diligent practice (and a dash of talent, which nobody wants to admit to). But this should not be the goal of everyone. Playing for enjoyment is perfectly valid and can add more color and less stress to your daily life. Unlike sports like figure skating, for example, playing piano or other instruments is not physically demanding, and your bodies do not have an “expiration date” past which it is impossible to learn quadruple jumps or other skills.

Whenever you try something new, the learning process always comes with some fear and nervousness. But when you genuinely have passion for something, such as music, these feelings can be transformed into anticipation and excitement. Entering a music studio filled with under-7s taking lessons can feel awkward, especially if you are older yet at a lower level than anyone else. But this is a good way to learn to do it for yourself, not anyone else.

The piano can even be inexpensive to learn, especially if you practice on an electronic keyboard instead of a grand piano. There are also countless teachers who are more than willing to teach adults instead of the disobedient and tantrum-prone children they are used to.
