Beijing’s New Kitten Friendly Bookstore

The newly opened Xinhua Bookstore is Beijing’s first pet-friendly bookstore where you can browse books and pet fluffy kittens all at the same time. It’s about time too! The combination of furry kittens and a peaceful afternoon curled up with a good book is a perfect pairing that we should have had long ago.

The humble new Xinhua Bookstore storefront doesn’t look any different than its other branches; aside from Chinese bestsellers, the shelves are lined with an assortment of trendy kids’ toys and stationery. But this new one has a dedicated enclosed area inside where visitors can lounge around on bean bags, surrounded by furry felines.

There are over 10 cats, most of them kittens as young as 3 months old, and a few older cats as well. Before entering the cat-friendly area, you’ll have to disinfect your hands and shoes.

Once inside the cozy cat corner, you’ll find a cushioned bench along with some soft bean bags for sitting surfaces. The cats have many hiding spots and wooden platforms to nap on and may take a while to warm up to you (as cats do). To entice them to you, the store also sells treats and toys you can buy to feed and gift the cats on site, and also to take home to your own furry companion.

You’ll have to make a reservation beforehand via Dianping to book a 2-hour slot to curl up with the kitties. Tickets during their soft opening are RMB 68 – RMB 98 per pax and kids are free during this time!
