Can You ACT In An Emergency? Upcoming EN & CN First Aid Workshop

First aid training may not sound fun or glamorous, but knowing the basics could save you, your child, and others from a whole lot of pain, not to mention even save a human life. However, research shows that 75 percent of parents do not feel confident enough to administer first aid in emergencies, even though more than 40 percent of parents have witnessed children choking before.
Another key statistic that stuck with me: Up to 150,000 people in the UK die each year in situations where first aid could make a difference.
The fact is, you don't have to get certified to know basic first aid. There are countless videos and tutorials online, plus free workshops in many schools and workplaces. Of course, if you want to get an in-depth understanding and be as prepared as you possibly can be, a hands-on workshop with certification tests is probably your best bet, but it's not necessary to save a life.
I had the opportunity to attend a free first aid workshop at Beijing City International School recently and was very inspired by Dr. Sarah Jiang, who conducted the training. She shared that it was her personal mission to educate as many people as possible in basic first aid because the knowledge and skills could make the difference between life and death.
Here are some interesting takeaways I got from the workshop:
Even children can do CPR on adults! So it's very worthwhile to take a family CPR course together or at least watch a video tutorial online and practice on each other.
When treating small burn wounds, do not apply ice directly to the skin! Start by cooling the damaged skin under running cool but not very cold water for at least ten minutes.
If someone is faint from low blood sugar, juice is a better choice than chocolate to increase their blood sugar quicker and more effectively.
ACT
Always remember to ACT before heading into any emergency situation: Assess the situation (look for danger in the environment etc), Call for help, then, finally, Treat. A reminder: The medical emergency number in China is 120, and 110 for the police.
Check out the video below to see how to put someone into a recovery position while awaiting medical assistance!
