The Contest Begins: Calling All International High School Bands

The Battle of the Bands at Modernista on May 5 is the ultimate event for international high school bands in Beijing.

It’s a chance to perform live at a cool venue, compete with other talented bands, and win some awesome prizes. And the best part is, it’s all for a good cause: supporting Our Learning House, a charity that helps kids in Beijing with special needs.

This student-run event is open to all international high school bands in Beijing, but space is limited: only 12 bands will be selected to rock the stage at Modernista.

Who can enter?

Bands need not have their own self-penned songs nor do they need an extensive set list. Cover songs are fine and in the competition, each band will only play two of their best.

How do you get in? You need to impress a panel of local experts who know their stuff when it comes to music. You will send in an audio or video recording of one of your songs by March 1, 2024.

The bands that make the cut will compete live at Modernista on Sunday, May 5, in front of a full house and a panel of professional musicians.

The bands will be scored on their musicality, spirit and stage presence, and the winner will be crowned the Best International High School Band in Beijing.

Second and third prizes will also be awarded, and all performers will receive a credential they can use for those wonderful college applications.

There will also be an Audience Favorite prize chosen by the crowd, so bring your squad to cheer for your band. Here's a video of Beijing band Easy Street rocking at Modernista:

Where to get tickets?

Tickets for the event will go on sale in March, so stay tuned for more details. All the proceeds from the ticket sales will go to Our Learning House, so you can rock out and make a difference at the same time.
