You may know him for his ability to tickle your funny bone during his Comedy Citadel nights, but did you know that Donnie Fan actually started out as a screenwriter? In fact, Fan even wrote and directed his first stage play in 2022 – Medea – which was performed at Theater 77 near Nanyang Hutong, where his new play The Heart Collector is currently showing.
Jingkids International (JKI) talks to Donnie Fan (DF) about his latest stage foray.

What’s The Heart Collector about and what inspired you to write it?

The Heart Collector is a tale I’ve carried for eight years, born from a simple dream of a tiny creature stealing hearts. I’m fascinated by the origins of emotions but sometimes feel out of sync with a world that seems increasingly transactional and skeptical of love. As I strive to keep that sense of wonder and simplicity, I reflect on the influence of creative minds like Tim Burton and Jim Henson, whose works shaped my beliefs since adolescence. Through this story, I aim to impart a sense of hope and introduce audiences to a new world, fostering connections and inspiring optimism.

This is your second stage play. What did you learn from your first that informed you in writing this one?

I think it’s very important to let the audience feel a strong connection with the characters. My last play, Medea, had characters based on Greek lore, but The Heart Collector’s characters are original creations. Figuring out how to write these characters in a way that will make them memorable and leave an impression on the audience was key.

How did you end up writing stage plays?

Even though my main gig is as an international touring stand-up comedian, my background is in screenwriting, primarily for film and television. After working on an opera at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, I was inspired to come to China. Since then, I’ve developed a passion for theater, appreciating both its constraints and unique opportunities compared to film.

Tell us straight – why should we watch The Heart Collector?

I find it incredibly exciting! The actors are phenomenal and the visuals and music add a lot of fun. While the story itself isn’t going to reinvent the wheel, there’s enough depth in the characters and connection to the audience that it’s worthwhile. I like to think of it as a young adult novel that can engage with both younger and older audiences thanks to its wholesome content. It’s rare to witness an original story on stage here in China, amidst adaptations and classics. While established plays like Matilda and the works of Shakespeare remain timeless, experiencing an original IP is a unique opportunity. Our IP is expanding with plans for an animated film, a line of clothing, and comic books that offer a fresh perspective compared to the play. The play offers a complete story, whereas the film will unfold as a series. Here you have the opportunity to get in on the ground floor.

What’s up next for you after this?

Next for me is delving into a new project, one that explores more mature themes. It centers on a girl who lost her father during Covid and discovers an unexpected means to communicate with him after his death. She grapples with the complexities of their strained relationship while coming to terms with not being by his side when he passed. And, as always, I am still Beijing’s resident English stand-up comedian (adults only, please!) at the Comedy Citadel!

Even though the play is performed in Mandarin, Fan assures us that the play has been well-received by non-native-speakers in the audience. Additionally, young audience members have given rave reviews of the show.

“This is my first time to watch a drama. I like it very much. I like the story and the actions of the actors, especially the little monkey. It’s very interesting. I understand; I also believe that love exists. If I were to rate this show, I’d give it a 9 out of 10.” – Xi Bao
