🚽 Face scanners installed to wipe out toilet paper theft

In an attempt to wipe out crime, the public bathrooms at the Temple of Heaven in Beijing have been equipped with sophisticated face recognition technology that will properly allocate a reasonable number of toilet paper squares to each visitor.

Earlier this month, a Beijing Evening News undercover investigation discovered that locals were frequenting the four-star toilets inside the Temple of Heaven park in order to snatch up as much toilet paper as they could possibly carry. Causing each restroom to use up over 30 rolls of toilet paper each day.

Tired of dealing with locals' shit, face recognition systems have been installed at three restrooms inside the park. In order to get toilet paper, visitors must remove their glasses and hat, and have their faces scanned by a high definition camera. Afterward, they are issued a 60-cm long piece of toilet paper by the wall-mounted machine. The whole thing takes just three seconds.

Authorities say that the system can remember faces, and that each individual will only be allocated paper once every nine minutes. They also emphasize that the system has been installed as part of a two-week trial, if people don't like it, it will be taken down. Meanwhile, workers are on hand at each restroom to instruct visitors on how to properly use the machine.

On Weibo, many netizens have mocked the system, adding that they don't think 60cm of paper would be enough for them. Still, the machine also has its proponents. "This is really good, I recommend that it be rolled out nationwide," writes one user.
