On Sunday afternoon, commuters at the Nanjing South Railway Station spotted a man walking slowly in front of a train apparently trying to reach the station platform. Unfortunately for him, he didn't quite make it.

The lower half of the man's body became trapped in between the high-speed train and the station platform. Rescuers arrived quickly to try and free the man who was being crushed to death. In a video, they can be heard telling the man to "keep breathing" and "don't sleep" before covering up his face from onlookers as he begins to lose consciousness. The rescuers used a jackhammer to drill away the station platform around the trapped man, hoping to pull him free.

Tragically, they were not able to rescue him in time. He was pronounced dead by a doctor at the scene.

It's not known why the man decided to walk in front of the train. One eyewitness report claims that he had been hopping from platform to platform, another that he had simply realized he was on the wrong platform.
