May Day crowds cause swinging bridge to sway too far

With millions of Chinese tourists flocking to sightseeing spots around the country over the weekend to celebrate the May Day holiday, a few too many of them decided to cross a swinging bridge in Jiangxi province at the same time.

Photos have hit the Chinese internet showing more than 20 tourists desperately holding on after a bridge that they were walking on nearly overturned.

The incident occurred at a scenic area outside of Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi province, on Sunday. Local media report that the problem was caused by the bridge being overloaded by the weight of the May Day crowds. Chinese netizens believe that it may have also been caused by some idiot trying to make the bridge sway. A further investigation is underway.

This comes only two weeks after another bridge collapsed at a tourist site in Jiangxi, sending nine Hong Kong tourists to the hospital.

Chinese tourist sites across the country are currently in the middle of a bridge-building mania, typically ones with glass-bottoms. Last year, the world's highest and longest glass-bottomed bridge opened in Zhangjiajie after undergoing stress tests from SUVs and sledgehammers in order to ensure the public that it was safe to walk across.
