As expected, this year's Golden Week has been even more hellish than usual with 461 million Chinese tourists traveling around the country during the first four days of the extended holiday.

That figure is an 11.4 percent increase compared to last year. Beforehand, it was estimated that 710 million trips would be taken by travelers inside China during the eight-day holiday week.

Over the first four days, domestic tourists spent 385.6 billion yuan, up 13.6 percent over the same period last year, China's official Xinhua news agency reported. Meanwhile, China's railway network saw at least 10 million passengers each day, including more than 15 million on Sunday, a new record.

If you, like us, have decided to hunker down at home, then here are some more pictures to help you get your head around what this all looks like, starting in the streets of Nanjing:

On to the dunes of Dunhuang:

The tourist sites of Beijing:

And Hangzhou's West Lake:

However, there does at least appear to be one place that is eerily free of crowds -- Henan's capital of Zhengzhou. We can't imagine why.
