Made from granulated sugar and glucose syrup, the candy has become so trendy online one Taobao seller has started calling it "internet-famous light bulb candy" (网红灯泡糖). It costs ¥29.90, and over 2,000 people have bought it.

The Shanghai Daily said the candy has the same shape and volume of a regular tungsten bulb. It's about six centimeters wide and 10 centimeters long, and weighs around 200 grams.

But "most people are able to open their mouth to about four centimeters wide," said Zhang Jin'an, director of Zhoupu Hospital's endocrinology department. "Potential mechanical injury is the major concern."

Other dangers await: when broken, fragments of the candy can easily enter the windpipe, and the candy's sharp stick can be dangerous.

And if injury doesn't scare you off, maybe the bulge will. "The amount of sugar in one bulb-shaped candy equals to three 100-gram steamed buns," Zhang said. "But compared to steamed buns, the candy contains no other nutrition, which can be considered as an unhealthy food."
