Yesterday, a young woman in Chengdu was reunited with her beloved lost pet for only a few brief and heartbreaking moments before it breathed its last after apparently being thrown out of a 6th floor window.

Xiao Wu, a 21-year-old girl living in the city’s Longquanyi District had adopted a Corgi which she named “Ryan” (莱恩) six months ago. The two quickly developed a bond and she went into a panic last month when her dog went missing.

Xiao Wu and her family looked all over the city for Ryan, but with no success. Finally, she spoke with a neighborhood security guard who told her that he had found the dog and, thinking that it was a stray, had given it to a pair of men.

Xiao Wu was able to track down these men who said that they had found the dog too noisy and had passed the pup along to a woman in her thirties who lived nearby. Xiao Wu was able to get the woman’s contact information and began “negotiating” to get her dog back.

The woman, given the pseudonym He Li, frightened Xiao Wu during their social messaging exchanges. At times, it appeared as though she simply wanted money: “Do you have a lot of money?” she once asked Xiao Wu.

While other times, she teased and even threatened Xiao Wu, writing that she planned to do harm to Ryan: “I asked my daughter, do you want the dog alive or dead… If my daughter didn’t like it, I would kill it. Right now, she likes it very much.”

And in another conversation she wrote that Xiao Wu should hand over her “living expenses” or she would be sent a video of a dog being “skinned and roasted.”

Yet another WeChat exchange shows how Xiao Wu offered to spend up to 10,000 yuan to buy He Li another dog. However, the woman responded that Xiao Wu ought to just buy herself a new dog instead.

After two weeks of this, Xiao Wu finally got fed up with these menacing negotiations and went to He Li’s apartment on Thursday afternoon to discuss the matter in person, being accompanied by a reporter and camera crew from the news outlet The Cover.

Once they arrived, they found the woman’s door locked, but they could hear a dog barking from inside. Eventually, He Li was forced to open the door after police showed up to mediate the situation. However, there was no sign of a dog inside the apartment and the woman pleaded ignorance about the whole matter.

Tragically, upon leaving the apartment building, Xiao Wu finally found Ryan, lying on the ground, twitching and bleeding from the mouth in a truly heartbreaking scene.

Xiao Wu quickly picked her dog up and rushed him to the nearest veterinarian’s office, but by then, it was too late. A worker at the office told reporters that the dog had been killed likely after being dropped from a great height. He Li’s apartment is on the sixth floor.

Police are now investigating the case, while He Li has reportedly made up an excuse to leave her apartment for the time being.
