On Friday, a store went up in flames in the Sichuan city of Mianyang. While no one was killed, the fire made national news this week after a boy was recorded celebrating the bright side of the blaze.

“Our home is on fire. Great! I’ll throw my school bag in!” the mischievous kid is heard saying, rather excitedly, while watching the fire from the street, seeing it as the perfect excuse for not doing his homework.

The video caused some Chinese netizens to worry about the future of their nation, and others to fret about what kind of punishment awaited the boy after his father heard the recording.

Last week, a young couple in Guilin took a similarly optimistic stance on a fire that broke out in their home, posing for an unusually upbeat photo shoot afterward inside their charred apartment.
