After dropping a girl’s corgi from a 6th floor window, a Chengdu woman has become public enemy number one in China, being bombarded with threats as the country’s infamous “human flesh search engine” has kicked into high gear.

The woman, He Xingli, is accused of holding a 21-year-old girl’s lost doggy for ransom, asking for money and threatening to eat the animal if she was not paid in text message exchanges with the corgi’s owner, named Xiao Wu, for a period of around two weeks starting in late December.

On January 11th, Xiao Wu finally paid a visit to He’s apartment to resolve the matter, accompanied by reporters and police. However, when they were eventually let inside, no dog was to be found. It was only when Xiao Wu left the apartment building that she spotted her lost pet, mortally wounded from a fall.

The following morning, He Xingli made a tearful apology to Xiao Wu at a district police station, claiming that she had not meant to kill the dog, but was trying to lower it from her sixth floor apartment window with rope and cloth when the puppy came loose and plummeted to the ground. Xiao Wu has refused to accept the woman’s apology and says that she plans to pursue the matter in court.

In the aftermath of what was one of the biggest stories on the Chinese internet last week, netizens have been hard at work leaking all sorts of information about He and her husband online, including their phone numbers, address, work units, social security information, license plate number, and even information archived at the hospital during the woman’s pregnancy.

Some have used this information to place threatening phone calls or write menacing text messages to He, others have even showed up at the couple’s home with a funeral wreath and fake paper money to burn. In one incident on Friday evening, a group arrived outside their door and began making threats, telling He’s husband that they could not guarantee his daughter’s safety.

And it appears that the incident has still not yet blown over. On Monday, six people arrived at the couple’s residence, demanding that a public apology be made. Police soon responded to the incident and took the six back to the station for questioning, one woman from Beijing has been given six days detention, according to the Chengdu Business Daily.

While the group claimed that it was only at the apartment to talk peacefully, videos show how the couple’s door had been graffitied with one woman in the group seen holding a can of spray paint.

“He Xingli, you human trash. Go die, stupid cunt. Die already,” reads the message on the door.

Considering the extreme reactions that have been brought forth by this incident, it will likely be a while before the couple’s life returns to normal — if it ever does. Honestly, moving might be the best option. So far, netizens don’t appear to feel even a bit of pity for the woman.

“Every time I think of her unhappy and fearful, I always can’t help but laugh under my quilt,” writes one Weibo user.
