“Ham Prince” of Nanjing arrested on suspicion of pork theft

Police in Nanjing apprehended a face all too familiar to them last week after multiple local butchers reported meat stolen from their shops.


Known among Pukou District police as the “Ham Prince,” this habitual pork burglar, identified as Wang Mou, has an almost thirty-five year rap sheet. Since his first hog heist in 1984, Wang has thrice been arrested for absconding with bacon, sausage, and salted ham.


Security footage shows Wang casually sidling up to a rack of cured meat in an otherwise deserted storefront, calmly poaching a hanging sausage, easing it into a paper bag, and making his getaway by ebike.


Meng Shengwen, an officer on the Pukou District force, told the Paper, “Seemingly every year he steals salted meat. He targets the time around the end of the year, just before Spring Festival.”
