It appears that the theme of this week for China’s state media is public safety with multiple government-run publications taking to the street to ask foreigners if they feel safe in China — though with a contrast in styles.

First we have a pretty straightforward China Daily video where tourists and international students give China glowing reviews in terms of safety.

“In my experience, Beijing is a very safe city. Much more so than compared to countries in the West that I’ve lived in,” says one international student.

Next, a similar, brief shoot from CGTN with foreigners praising China for both its number of people and cameras:

“People here really respect women… Before I came to China, I looked for numbers about women, crime, and things and it said that Beijing was a really nice place to come because there was none or almost zero,” one woman said.

And finally a video from the Shanghai office of the Global Times that has been posted to Chinese-language social media, which puts its own special spin on the issue.

“I’ve been to Xinjiang, some people consider that this place is not safe, but I wouldn’t say so. I find it as safe as anywhere else,” says one Russian woman.

“I was in Xinjiang Urumqi yesterday. Many police checks all over,” echoes Swedish man in praise.

“As far as I know there’s no gun violence in China. If you compare it to America that’s a different story,” says a guy in a NASA jacket.

“In America when you see the police, you feel scared. But in China, it’s not like that,” agrees an Indian guy.

“Before coming to China I was in Japan for two years, so I had an idea of China that was a bit biased. Especially in the West, the media are not doing the proper coverage of China,” the guy’s companion agrees.
