When she was a 12-year-old girl, one woman shoplifted a bar of soap from a supermarket in Henan’s Yichuan city. For the last 18 years, that crime has weighed on her conscience. Last week, she finally decided to free herself of that weight.

The woman surnamed Qu returned to the shop, carrying 100 bars of scented soap — just like the one she had stolen nearly two decades ago.

In video posted to Chinese social media by Btime.com, the woman is heard explaining to a worker about how she had stolen a bar of papaya-scented soap that her mom really wanted but could not afford.

“This mistake has been a weight on my heart all of these years,” she says. “Because it is the worst thing that I’ve ever done in my life.”

After hearing her story, the shop’s owner was deeply moved and decided to pay the gesture forward by gifting the bars of soap to local sanitation workers.

So, guess it’s about time that you fess up to that lollipop you stole when you were seven, huh?
