Though hard work and dedication, a 52-year-old woman from Taiwan has turned herself into a belly dance champion, paying for her lessons by sweeping the floors of KTV lounges.

A decade ago, Lin Ming-hui experienced birth complications. To recover, she signed up for yoga classes, however, it was the beauty of those practicing belly dancing next door that really caught her eye, reports Apple Daily.

So, instead, Lin began learning to belly dance. Six years ago, she started to compete at local competitions. While she didn’t perform well at first, her movements gradually grew more precise and fluid.

However, three years ago, Lin’s money became much more tight when she divorced her husband. But, rather than give up the hobby she had become so passionate about, Lin decided to take on a second job — working as a janitor at a KTV, cleaning dozens of rooms per shift, and as a cleaner at a theme park.

She used the money she made as a custodian to pay for her belly dancing lessons. Meanwhile, she took every opportunity that she could get to practice her craft, running through routines in public parks — pretending that she was on stage as curious passersby gathered around to watch.

Now, Lin is one of the top belly dancers in Taiwan, winning 12 local dance competitions. At the end of last year, she even made a trip to South Korea to compete at a competion there, coming out on top in the individual dance category.

Apple Daily calls her the oldest Taiwanese person to ever win a dance competition.

“Many people think that belly dancing is only for young, hot women. But you hear someone say that and you know that they don’t understand. Belly dancing is about more than just shaking your hips and fluttering your eyelashes,” Lin says.
