Back in December, a 65-year-old man surnamed Guo walked into a police station in Shanghai’s Songjiang district to tell officers about how he had been conned out of tens of thousands of yuan by some nefarious scammers claiming to be sexy ladies.

Guo said that he had met a woman on QQ who had invited him to join a closed chat group filled with other apparently flirtatious young ladies who convinced him that they needed an assortment sex toys for planned group sex sessions.

After blowing through 21,600 yuan ($3,407), Guo finally realized that he had been had and went to the police, reports Eastday.com.

Following a two month investigation, officers finally managed to track the scammers down late last month, raiding their Hongkou district flat. According to Shine, the masterminds behind this scheme were a married couple.

Using an assortment of fake QQ accounts carrying photos of attractive young women, they would seek out middle-aged and even elderly men, convincing them to join a special chat group for a 500 yuan fee. From there, they would try to convince the men to send them more and more money for “sex toys,” until their victims finally realized that it was all a scam.

Police say that it’s not clear how many men got caught up in this deception as most were likely too ashamed to come forward to police after finding out the truth.
