A pair of twin sisters who were separated shortly after their birth 36 years ago, were reunited last week in Hangzhou.

The twins, Wang Hui and Wu Lu, were each given up for adoption 16 days after they were born, delivered to two different families in the city with their birth parents unable to afford the cost of supporting and raising the infant siblings, Hangzhou News reports.

After growing up, both spent time trying to locate their lost twin, but had no success.

However, that all changed last Sunday when Wang Hui, a local bus driver, talked about her unsuccessful search for her sister with a police officer on duty at the bus station named Zheng Hangen.

Wang told Zheng that she believed her sister was also living in Hangzhou, explaining that once a passenger had told her that he had met someone in the city who looked very much her.

With that info, Zheng searched through the police ID database, finding that there were 280 women born on the same date as Wang. He then began looking through the women’s photos, one by one, trying to find one that looked similar to Wang.

After staying up through the night, he finally found his match in Wu Lu, finding that the woman’s facial features looked pretty much identical to those of Wang. He called up Wu who told him that she had always known that she had a twin sister, but had been unable to find her.

In a tearful reunion, the twins were reunited at a Hangzhou police station last week. It turns out that they live in the same neighborhood.

Back in December, a pair of twins in Jiangsu province were reunited after being separated for 26 years thanks to an identity fraud investigation.

And, last January, a pair of 10-year-old Chinese twin sisters were reunited with a bit more fanfare on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” The two girls had been separated at birth and then adopted by two different American families living on opposite ends of the country.
