After being caught drunk driving in Zhejiang province, one particular shameless laowai recently attempted to evade punishment by repeatedly stressing to the cops that he’s a foreigner doing business in China, even demanding that they take him directly to his country’s consulate.

“You must quickly take me to Shanghai! You know?” the foreign man says in Chinese to a police officer arresting him on the sidewalk in the city of Yiwu.

However, unfortunately for the guy, the days of extraterritorial rights in China for foreigners are now long gone. The officer responded instead by telling the man that they are simply enforcing the law, while also informing the guy that he is wearing a body cam — a fact that the foreigner doesn’t seem to catch.

“I’m here doing business,” the foreigner continues to insist, apparently believing that his occupation will somehow save him.

“Whether you are doing business or not, it doesn’t matter to us. You are in China and must obey Chinese laws!” the frustrated officer answers. “You were driving drunk! You broke the law!”

On Chinese social media, the arresting officer has been praised for how he handled the strange encounter. Meanwhile, one Weibo user referred to the drunk-driving laowai as part of the “foreign trash” that needs to be swept away from China.
