In everyone’s worst nightmare come to life, a young woman was just about to take a shower on Thursday night when she spotted something slithering around in her squat toilet.

“Dad! There’s a snake in the toilet!” the woman cried out, according to a report from The Cover. Her father, surnamed Cai, arrived quickly to find that there was indeed a serpent inside the shitter. Unsure about what to do, he decided to call in the big guns—his own father.

Grandpa Cai had grown up out in the countryside and knew how to handle snakes. After flooding the squat toilet with water, causing the snake to rise up, the old man took the lead in pulling the reptile out. In the process, they discovered that the animal—later identified as a (non-poisonous) king ratsnake—was much larger than they had originally supposed, measuring at least a meter in length and 5 centimeters in diameter.

The family lives on the 6th floor of a residential apartment building in Chengdu, which you’d think would keep them safe from any invasive serpents. After dumping the snake in the garden outside the apartment building, Cai uploaded footageonto WeChat of the strange incident, wondering how a snake had managed to crawl its way all the way up to his flat.

Soon, an upstairs neighbor came forward with the answer. A woman living on the 8th floor, surnamed Tao, confessed that her husband had recently caught the animal, which she was planning to turn into “snake wine” in order to help her ailing lower back.

However, on Thursday evening, they had company over and Tao was forced to store the snake inside a plastic bag in the bathroom so that it wouldn’t scare the kids. Instead, the animal took the opportunity to escape, slithering out of Tao’s toilet and making its way to Cai’s.

A police officer arriving at the scene the following morning was told that Tao’s husband had managed to find the snake again in the garden outside and had taken it to the forest to set it free… though we’d be interested in checking out the family’s wine collection.
