After getting off her plane at the Bangkok airport, a Chinese tourist was kidnapped in plain sight before being held for ransom by a gang that included four of her compatriots.

Surveillance camera footage from inside the Suvarnabhumi Airport on May 6th shows how 39-year-old Chen Jincai was surrounded by a group of four men and one woman shortly after she stepped off her flight from Hong Kong. The group grabbed Chen by the arms and swiftly escorted her through security checks and out of the airport with none of her fellow travelers or police officers apparently noticing that anything was amiss.

Afterward, Chen’s husband received a message from the kidnappers asking for a 10 million baht ($311,000 / 2 million yuan) ransom for the release of his wife. However, after he handed over the money, the gang still refused to set his wife free, and instead demanded an additional 5 million baht ($155,000 / 1 million yuan).

With no other choice, Chen reached out to Thai authorities for help.

On May 19th, the gang dumped Chen—unharmed—on the side of a road in Bangkok before fleeing the country by flying out of the Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Thai police say that they are hunting the fugitives, adding that four of the five principal kidnappers were from China (with one holding a Hong Kong passport).

Already, two Thai citizens have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping. Police say that they were given 1,000 baht a day by the gangleader to watch over Chen. During her abduction, Chen was moved between a Bangkok hotel, a rented house in Pattaya, and a house on the island of Koh Samet, before being brought back to Bangkok.
