On May 20th, a woman walked into a police station in the Henan capital of Zhengzhou, claiming that her 1-year-old daughter “Huahua” had gone missing.

The woman, surnamed Yu, was from Yunnan province. She said that she arrived in the city to do some sightseeing, but had lost track of her infant daughter inside the railway station

However, after investigating the case for just 10 hours, police found that the little girl had not gone missing, as her mother had claimed, but instead had been bought and sold.

The mom was forced to admit that she had, in fact, sold her own daughter for 50,000 yuan ($7,800) after arriving in Zhengzhou. Immediately afterward, she went shopping, squandering 6,000 yuan ($940) on cosmetics and other products.

On May 23rd, police were able to track down the little girl and eventually return her to her father’s arms while also arresting two people on suspicion of child trafficking.

The woman will have to compete for the title of “world’s worst mom” with a woman from rural Henan province who has been accused of using her sick 2-year-old daughter to raise funds, but then failing to actually use those donations to provide any treatment for her daughter, instead using some of the money to treat her son’s cleft lift.

Without treatment, the little girl’s condition worsened and she passed away earlier this month. Meanwhile, her mother has refused to say what has become of all the money donated on her behalf.
