A hero has emerged on the Chinese internet who really helps to put into perspective our own privileged life of not being boiled alive as food.

In a viral video, a determined crayfish is seen escaping from the bubbly cauldron of doom that is Chinese hot pot. Unable to pull its left pincer from the searing soup, the courageous crustacean quickly snips it off with its other claw before scurrying away to freedom.

Not only did this little guy cheat certain death, he also found a home in the process with the Douyin user who uploaded the clip saying that after watching the epic escape he couldn’t help but adopt the crayfish and put it into his aquarium.

In yet more good news, it turns out that crayfish claws grow back!

However, this creature’s success story is a rarity in China where crayfish are more often bound to their fate of being used as ammo in food fights or being peeled at restaurants by part-time professionals.
