A woman surnamed Ou from the city of Luoding in western Guangdong province went missing after she called for a ride on the Didi app. Two days later, her lifeless body was found in the freezer of a barbeque shop owned by her alleged murderer.

Ou’s brother described his sister as a person with a gentle personality. She worked as a receptionist at a gym. She was only 23 years old.

The gruesome details of Ou’s murder unraveled as police arrested the alleged murderer on June 19th. On the 17th, at around 3 am,  Out got off work and went out for a late-night meal with her friends. Unfortunately, she found that she forgot to bring the keys to her home and decided to instead stay at a hotel for the night. After the hotel informed her that all of the rooms were fully booked, she called for a ride through the Didi app to look for another hotel, reports The Cover.

In CCTV footage posted online by news outlet k618.cn, Ou is seen leaving the hotel after learning that there were no rooms available. Hotel staff said that she got into a white vehicle after the driver waved her over.

Ou’s friends said that they tried to search for her after they were unable to contact her at around 4 am. However, they went home empty-handed and never heard from her again.

According to Didi, the white car that Ou boarded was not the one she hired. The Didi driver had ended up canceling the order when he couldn’t find Ou at the hotel.

Two days later, police announced that through the CCTV footage they had identified the driver of the white car as a man surnamed Zhang. After Ou mistook Zhang for being her Didi driver, Zhang drove her to his farm 10 minutes away, police said. He then raped and murdered Ou, hiding her corpse in the freezer of his barbeque shop. According to Ou’s family, strangulation marks can be seen on Ou’s neck.

This grisly murder comes a month after the high-profile killing of a 21-year-old flight attendant by her Didi driver in Zhengzhou. The murder sparked national outrage and many questions concerning the safety standards of China’s leading ride-hailing service. In the wake of the killing, Didi apologized and announced a range of changes, including limiting its Hitch service to only same-sex rides during late-night and early morning hours.

Of course, this latest murder shows that it’s not only Didi drivers you have to be afraid of.
