Man banned from Disneyland after slapping character in costume

A man has been banned from Shanghai Disneyland for six months after he was filmed slapping a mascot on the back of the head last Friday.

Footage shared by Pear Video shows ShellieMay, the Disney Bear, wiggling her behind while walking away from a crowd of people before becoming the victim of an unprovoked attack as a man in a green shirt suddenly stretches out to strike the performer in the back of the head.

While the blow may have appeared soft and cushioned, a witness who was holding the bear’s hand at the time said the sound of the impact was actually quite loud.

Shortly after the incident, the performer was quickly escorted backstage while the attacker was immediately expelled from the park and banned from re-entering in the next six months. It’s not clear why he decided to strike the bear.

On Chinese social media, many netizens have criticized the man’s mischievous actions, calling for an even harsher penalty to be doled out. One Weibo user commented that there is a hard structure inside the headpiece, which could amplify a hit on the head and cause a concussion.

Indeed, last November, a woman visiting Shanghai Disneyland came up behind one performer dressed as Dale, of Chip ‘n’ Dale fame, and smacked the giant chipmunk on the back of the head, thinking that it “would be fun.” The performer was later diagnosed with a mild concussion.

Meanwhile, it certainly appears that the happiest place in the world (or at least in Pudong) is becoming a warzone of late. Last week, a fight broke out between visitors after a woman accused an 8-year-old kid of touching her butt.
