On Sunday evening, the signboard of a souvenir shop on East Nanjing Road collapsed, killing three passersby and injuring six more.

The accident occurred at 9:40 pm at 132 East Nanjing Road (an area with heavy foot traffic that almost every visitor to Shanghai has walked by, located about halfway between Henan Middle Road and the Bund). According to the information office of Huangpu district, those injured are reported to be receiving medical treatment and to be out of life-threatening danger.

Typhoon Yagi, the 14th of the year, made landfall in China on Sunday night on the coast of Zhejiang’s Wenling county, bringing with it gale force winds of up to 100 kph. Shanghai is located more than 400 km away from Wenling and has not been majorly affected by the typhoon, though the city has experienced strong winds of more than 25 kph. It’s not clear if these winds caused the sign’s collapse.

The work safety bureau of Huangpu district is currently investigating the incident. We will update this post as more information becomes available.
