Crazy Rich Asians is getting a sequel: China Rich Girlfriend!

Following the release of The Joy Luck Club in 1993, Asians had to wait 25 years for Hollywood to finally release another studio movie with an all-Asian cast. It doesn’t look like they will have to wait quite that long for the next one.

Plans have already been announced for a sequel to the breakout rom-com hit of the summer, Crazy Rich Asians, which earned a whopping $35.3 million at the box office over its first five days, making it the most successful romantic comedy since 2015’s Trainwreck.

Set in the high-society of Singapore, Crazy Rich Asians was based on the best-selling novel by Singaporean-American author Kevin Kwan. The film’s sequel will be based on Kwan’s follow-up novel, China Rich Girlfriend. A mid-credits scene at the end of Crazy Rich Asians had already teased at the continuation of the saga for those who had read the books.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros will look to bring back the entire team behind Crazy Rich Asians, including producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim, and director Jon M. Chu. At the moment, Chu is working on a number of other projects, so it’s not clear when production will start on China Rich Girlfriend.

The title of Kwan’s second novel comes from one exchange between characters in the book which goes: “These people aren’t just everyday rich with a few hundred million… They are China rich!” Part of the story also takes place in China.

However, this future film’s success in China is far from assured. There has still been no news of whether Crazy Rich Asians will be ever be shown on screens in the Middle Kingdom — where ostentatious displays of wealth are technically frowned upon by censors. Earlier this month, producer John Penotti told the Hollywood Reporter that: “We’re all praying to the China gods right now. From my colleagues in Beijing, it looks like we’re in strong consideration.”

But, if Crazy Rich Asians doesn’t manage to gain approval from China’s State Administration of Radio and Television, it would seem that a film titled “China Rich Girlfriend” will be an even harder sell. After all, what would Chairman Mao think!?
