Safety rope breaks off as tourist jumps on high-altitude bridge

The Wansheng Ordovician Theme Park in central China is a thrill-seekers paradise, boasting an attraction where visitors jump from plank to plank on a cliffside gap bridge that is positioned more than 150 meters above the ground. Pulse-pounding stuff. Though a new video has raised the stakes a wee bit.

In the video, which has gone viral over the Golden Week holiday, a tourist is seen hopping across the bridge only to get to the end and look back to find that the safety rope which had been attached to his back had broken off. There is no safety net underneath the bridge.

Understandably, the clip generated alarm across Chinese social media. In response to the uproar, authorities at the Wansheng Economic Development Zone, located about 100km from the mega-city of Chongqing, launched an investigation. Yesterday, they announced that the terrifying incident had been caused by a mistake made by a staff member.

The attraction has been closed for the time being.

With beautiful views alone no longer enough enjoy to attract the interest of tourists, scenic spots in China have been competing in recent years to build the most thrilling, high-altitude attractions and, in this respect, the Wansheng Ordovician Theme Park has placed itself at the top of the pack.

Along with the gap bridge, the park also boasts a triangular glass-bottomed bridge that juts out 80 meters from the cliffside…

As well as a number of cliffslide swings which dangle tourists above a 300-meter drop with no safety net underneath.

Earlier this year, a spokesman for the park told the MailOnline that the swing is “100 percent safe.” It seems likely that he would have said the same thing about the bridge.
