The popular Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant in Yuyuan Garden reopened on October 26 after six months of refurbishments with new dishes and a new decor.

The renovations, its biggest in over a hundred years and the first since 2010, saw the restaurant’s layout rearranged and the three floors redesigned. Renowned Hong Kong designer Alan Chan led the revamp, and he introduced elements highlighting the restaurant’s century-long existence with prints, woodcut paintings, and calligraphy from famed Chinese artist Feng Zikai.

Besides the signature Nanxiang steamed buns, also known as xiaolongbao, diners can also order new dumpling flavors such as spicy mackerel.

Additionally, the restaurant now lets customers order a pot of tea from the the nearby Mid-Lake Pavilion Teahouse to drink with their steamed buns, a traditional practice dating back to the 1800s.

Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant first opened in Jiading District’s Nanxiang Town, located about 90 minutes by car from downtown Shanghai. It’s thought to be the birthplace of xiaolongbao. The restaurant moved to Yuyuan during the mid-1800s.
