In less than a week, police in the city of Wuhan have managed to crack the case of the impromptu porn screening at a local Haidilao hot pot restaurant.

As diners were enjoying their meals on the night of January 5th, a big-screen TV on the wall of the restaurant which had been playing Haidilao ads suddenly switched over to pornography. A waiter was able to turn off the television, but not before one customer snapped a photo of the screen.

That explicit image soon went viral on Chinese social media with one Weibo hashtag tallying more than 380 million views.

The following day, Haidilao responded to the incident with a statement apologizing to customers and explaining that they had reported the matter to the police. On Friday, police announced that they had detained the culprit, a mischievous man surnamed Liang.

It turns out that Liang had managed to crack the wifi password and gain access to the TV with his smartphone. He then decided to broadcast porn, thinking it would be a funny little prank. “I was really bored at the time and wanted to play a prank. I didn’t think it would turn into something so serious,” he is seen telling police in a clip from Pear Video.

It’s not yet clear if Liang will face any sort of punishment.
