Maryland prof resigns after saying "all Chinese students cheat"

A University of Maryland professor has resigned after Chinese students filed an official complaint against him for allegedly painting all students from China as a bunch of cheaters.

In their complaint, the Chinese students described business professor David Weber as saying things like:  “All Chinese students cheat their way into the US and the University of Maryland… This is not your home, you all cheat in your home… You will have to go back home, and never come to the United States again… Your visas will be revoked,” according to the WAMU campus radio station.

Weber is said to have made these sort of comments on a number of occasions last year, particularly when accusing a group of Chinese students of having cheated on a final exam. “You cheated your way into the University of Maryland, but you chose to study in America, so in America, we don’t allow you to do that anymore,” one student remembered him as saying.

After the complaint was made public at the end of last month, Weber told WAMU that his words were misquoted or taken out of context, insisting that he was only trying to uphold Maryland’s academic honesty policies. However, he has now resigned from his position at the university.

Over the years, Chinese students have gained a reputation for cheating their way into American universities via paid test takers and essay writers along with fraudulent credentials. Some have been deported for this kind of thing.

Of course, they aren’t the only ones. This week, the academic world has been wracked by the largest college admissions scam ever prosecuted in the US, involving wealthy families buying their kids’ way into some of the country’s top universities through a scheme that either helped them cheat on the SAT or bribed school officials to accept them as student athletes — even if they had never actually played the sport.
