A health-conscious woman has given a whole new meaning to the term “juicing.”

Through an interest in home remedies, the 51-year-old woman surnamed Zeng from the city of Chenzhou in Hunan province came to believe that the best way to fully absorb nutrients from fresh fruit would be to inject the juice directly into her veins.

Therefore, she blended together some 20 different fruits and used an IV to introduce the mixture into her bloodstream. Soon, she came down with a fever and started to feel very itchy. However, she told no one what she had done until her husband finally noticed that something was wrong and rushed to her hospital, reports the Xiaoxiang Morning News.

Zeng’s case was too serious for the local hospital which transferred her to a larger one where she was taken into the intensive care unit. The “home remedy” had caused damage to her liver, kidney, and heat, and doctors said that she was in danger of dying from multiple organ failure.

After five days in the ICU, she was finally deemed in a safe enough condition to be transferred out. Following the brush with death, Zeng told reporters that she never would have thought that fresh fruit could be fatal.
