Jiangsu driver fails breathalyzer test after eating durian
After failing a breathalyzer test, a man in Jiangsu’s Rudong county insisted to police that he had not been drinking, but had only been eating some durian.
Officers were understandably skeptical of the man’s claims but were shocked when a blood alcohol test revealed that there was, in fact, no alcohol in his system. He had been telling the truth.
Curious, police then decided to carry out a test of their own, which, fortunately, they decided to film — for science! In the experiment, one brave officer took a bite of durian and then blew into a breathalyzer, registering a BAC of 0.036, above the 0.02 legal limit in China.
Three minutes later, he was tested again and received a reading of zero.

It turns out that a number of different foods like fruits and products like mouthwash can produce false positives in breathalyzer tests. Police note that if you have been drinking, you won’t be able to get out of a drunk driving charge simply by claiming to have been eating durian as a blood test will next be administered to divine the truth.
