3-year-old boy loses fingertip while playing around on escalator

Shanghaiist Shanghaiist 2019-05-20

The escalators’ reign of terror continues in China with a little boy losing a fingertip to one of the machines at a Sichuan shopping mall.

Surveillance footage from the mall in the city of Luzhou shows the 3-year-old seated on an escalator step going downward. At the bottom, he reaches down and his fingers become stuck. Standing a few steps farther up, his mom reacts quickly and pulls his hand free, however, in the process the tip of his index finger was nipped off.

The shopping mall has refused to take full responsibility for the accident, noting that there are a plethora of warning signs around and that parents should be responsible for looking after their own children.

A few years back, a lack of parental supervision and some faulty equipment led to a terrifying string of escalator accidents in China. While things have quieted down recently, every now and again, a shopping mall escalator tries to swallow another child.
