Woman spends most of her salary on crayfish

Shanghaiist Shanghaiist 2019-05-20

A seafood-obsessed woman has landed on her mother-in-law’s bad side after her husband revealed what she does with the majority of her earnings.

In WeChat conversation screencaps that have gone viral on Chinese social media, the husband asks his mother for some money to help pay for horse-riding lessons for their daughter. His mom then asks what happened to the 10,000 yuan ($1,450) that she gave to them last week, pointing out that his wife earns money as well.

The son then tells his mom that his wife earns a salary of just 3,000 yuan ($430) a month and that she spends around 2,000 yuan ($290) of that buying crayfish to eat online.

As you might expect, the mother is rather taken aback by this revelation, chastising her daughter-in-law for her “wasteful” spending while also worrying that crayfish contain harmful “toxins” which could prevent the couple from having a second kid.

The daughter-in-law shared these screencaps with her own circle of friends, declaring that she should be able to do what she wants with her own money and that she doesn’t want to have another child anyway. The woman also expressed her frustration at her husband taking her mother-in-law’s side in the matter.

However, Chinese net users have also been less than sympathetic to the woman’s cause, arguing that if she wants to spend so much on crayfish, then they shouldn’t be asking her husband’s mom for money.
