Worker paints over Houston Rockets themed court in Shanghai

Shanghaiist Shanghaiist 2019-10-23

Starting from Chinese state media, basketball association, tech giants, and apparel brands, China’s Houston Rockets ban appears to now be working its way down to the lower levels.
On Twitter, Cameron Wilson of the website Wild East Football has shared a video of a worker painting over the Rockets’ logo in an indoor basketball court in Shanghai which is themed around the team.
The worker appears to have just partially finished painting over an illustration of former Rockets star Tracy McGrady, obscuring the back of his jersey with a shroud of red. On the next wall, current star James Harden awaits his fate.

The Rockets were once one of the most popular teams in China after drafting Yao Ming with the first overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft. That’s all changed this week after Houston GM Daryl Morey tweeted out in support of the Hong Kong protests.
Since then, both CCTV and Tencent Sports have declared that they will not be broadcasting Rockets games, the Chinese Basketball Association has suspended all cooperation with the team, and Hupu, the most popular hub for online NBA discussion for Chinese fans, has removed its Rockets team forum.
