Shanghai starts temperature tests at airports, train stations
While Wuhan has been put on lockdown to prevent the further spread of a deadly new coronavirus, over in Shanghai, authorities are doing what they can to save the city from a similar fate.
Temperature checks have been set up at both the Pudong and Hongqiao airports, as well as the city’s railway stations with passengers being stopped and having their temperatures taken before being allowed to continue along into town.
In addition, a clean-up campaign has been launched targeting the city’s wet markets with officers being dispatched on Wednesday to sterilize areas in 730 markets across Shanghai. It’s believed that one of these markets in Wuhan, where live animals are kept and sold, was the source of the outbreak.
That outbreak began last month but authorities only started restricting travel this week, meaning that carriers of the virus had weeks to travel out of the city unfettered.
Shanghai is, of course, one of China’s main travel destinations. So far, the city’s health authorities have reported 16 confirmed coronavirus cases and another 22 suspected cases. Apart from Wuhan, this is one of the highest totals in the country.
