Shanghai man says he found a disposable mask in delivery dish

Shanghaiist Shanghaiist 2020-09-07

A restaurant in Shanghai has come under investigation after a customer claimed that he found a topical extra ingredient in his dish.
The customer, surnamed Yang, said that he ordered the boiled catfish from Yuxin Sichuan (渝信川菜), a Sichuan-style chain restaurant, via Ele.me on March 20.
When he and his wife started chowing down, they discovered a disposable face mask amidst the bean sprouts.
Yang took a photo of the dish and reported the matter to authorities.

However, upon initial investigation, it’s unclear how the mask came to be in the catfish.
Huangpu district’s market regulator reviewed surveillance footage which showed workers at the Yuxin Sichuan outlet on Huasheng Square preparing Yang’s dish. The workers were all wearing mask, however, at no point is a mask seen slipping into the food.
While some outlets are trying out delivery seals in Shanghai to prevent food tampering, this dish was not sealed so it’s unclear if the mask got into the dish after leaving the restaurant.
The regulator has said that it will continue to look into the matter, though it’s unclear what else they can do.
