Research Assistant / Intern (1 Year Contract)
1. Television Audience Behaviour: The intern will be undertaking the analysis of performance data on TV programmes with a view to making conclusions and recommendations about what is working and what is not. An interest in television would be a distinct advantage.
2. Data Analysis: The intern will be working with massive volumes of TV ratings data for thousands of programmes from scores of countries around the world. As such, they must be interested in, and motivated to work with, large datasets. The must have an impeccable attention to detail and must be strong with numerical and mathematical analysis. They needn’t have done exactly this work before, but should evidence relevant skills from the academic or any professional work experience.
3. Data Collection: Much of the global analysis and reporting relies on the collection and consolidation of data from our research teams around the world. The Intern will facilitate this process sending out briefs and monitoring the status of the return of this data. As such, the intern must have good written and spoken English as many of their contact will already be working in their second language. If the intern had any experience with television measurement tools (e.g., Techdge’s Advantedge) would be a distinct advantage.
4. Data Cleaning: Because many of the markets around the world work with different software (and in different languages) there is always some work needed to harmonise the data received from different countries. This will generally be work in Excel to standardise names and align reporting formats. As such, the intern should have excellent Excel skills (including formulas such as VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables etc.) and possible even some experience of building databases.
5. Data Visualisation: Much of the work of the global team, and indeed the research teams in general, is currently migrating to online data visualisation tools, such as Power BI. If the intern had any experience with such platforms, or had studied a related field this could be a considerable advantage.
6. Social Media: Although not core to the role, the intern is likely to be collecting and manipulating some social media engagement data on top of the TV performance data (ratings). Any experience working with social media data from Facebook, Twitter etc would therefore be an advantage.
7. Video Analytics: As above, not core to the role, but the intern will also be interacting with video on demand data and data from our streaming players. Any experience with Google Analytics or other digital media metrics will of course be advantageous.
Academic Background
Because of the highly quantitative nature of the role, it is likely that the successful candidate will have a strong analytic background such as mathematics, science, engineering, finance. Computer Sciences would be a strong alternative. Other non-quantitative degrees will be considered so long as the candidate can evidence strong analytical skills.
Technical Skills & Experience
1. Excellent numeracy skills including statistical analysis
2. An absolute whizz in Excel, using macros, pivot tables, lookups etc.
3. The ability to present complex data stories simply and creatively
4. Good at charting data to tell stories
5. Experience of international television ratings an advantage but not essential
6. Experience of building and managing databases an advantage
7. Experience with MS Word and PowerPoint
