Two Chinese state-owned airlines on Wednesday night sent flights to fetch more than 2,700 Chinese tourists from Bali.

China Southern Airlines sent two planes from Guangzhou and Shenzhen, while China Eastern Airlines flew in four from Beijing and Shanghai.

Jetstar said it would start with those stranded the longest - some already waiting four days - but some passengers said the first available flight was a week away. →

Others are taking matters into their own hands, booking expensive tickets to other airports like Singapore and making their way home from there.

Some are even getting buses and ferries to other Indonesian islands to fly out of other airport like Surabaya on nearby Java. →

Keira Nolan said Jetstar told her group they couldn't fly back to Perth until December 7 as there were so many other passengers.

'We're going to try and go to another airport — we're going to catch a bus and a ferry and another bus for 12 hours or something like that,' she told the ABC. →

'Hopefully it's a straight direct flight not a 12-hour flight.'

Patrice Copeland and two friends were on vacation in Bali and planning to fly to Singapore Monday morning, where they were hoping to see the sights before heading home to the U.S.

Copeland said she's been moving her luggage around the airport every few hours.

When CNBC spoke with her Tuesday morning, she had been there for more than 24 hours and had no information about when she might be able to leave.

"Perhaps I'm spoiled coming from the states, but I would have expected, if not a hotel accommodation for everyone on the flight, at least a comfortable space in the airport," Copeland said. "Yesterday I spent all my time bouncing from restaurant to restaurant just to sit."

Copeland had not yet heard if the airport will open Wednesday, "They're not saying anything," she said. "I was just told, 'There's lots of restaurants around, you can go and sit.'"

They were furious as they continuously watched a large group of a Chinese tourists getting choppered out of the small coastal town - thanks to the Chinese Government - while calls to the British Embassy were falling flat.

"We've run out of puff, we've run out of fuel, we've run out of light," Evans told the distraught family. "You'll be on the first flight [today]."

He offered to host the family for the night as all of the choppers available had been commissioned by the Chinese.

@Skyline Pigeon, United States:

I can appreciate the additional expenses and such, due to this; however, why would a person go on vacation knowing there was an active volcano? Before leaving, they could have rescheduled. If they were that intent on going, then they should have made some sort of backup plan for a 'worst case' situation. Going on vacation is optional, so too going to far flung locales. They're fun when things go well, but when things go bad, they often can be very difficult to deal with.

Like the day in 2014 when police rushed to the home of a man in Caojiadu sub district who had just called the emergency number. They burst in the door only to find the guy was lazing on his bed. He told the stunned police that he was hungry but couldn't be bothered cooking. "Can you guys go and buy a bowl of noodles for me?"

Last week, when the low temperatures hit Shanghai many residents were calling the police when their water pipes burst. "Within a day we had more than 20 calls from people wanting us to repair their water pipes. But we had to answer the calls and then explain to these people they had to call a property management company or plumbers."

Under the city regulations, the police have to answer every call personally regardless of the reason. "So even though we know that it's about burst pipes and has nothing to do with us, we still have to rush there," Jiang explained. He is concerned that the growing number of calls made for the wrong reasons could lead to a serious waste of police resources. "If there is a real emergency happening these inappropriate calls could divert police from a really dangerous situation."
