本期宣讲会邀请到了数学与应用数学专业负责人李玉田教授为大家介绍专业的课程安排、师资团队、毕业生就业前景、深造学习等方面的信息;同时,活动邀请到了王东教授带来自己在应用数学领域的科研分享。此外,张功球教授将与大家简要介绍数学与应用数学——金融数学专修方向。

To enrich your knowledge about the Mathematics and Applied Mathematics programme offered in SSE, an online information session will be held on 23 April (Saturday) at 16:00. All of you are welcome!
In this information session, we invite Prof. Yutian LI, the programme coordinator of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, to introduce the curriculum design, course description, career prospects of graduates and graduate study, etc. of the programme. Prof. Dong WANG will share his research experiences in applied mathematics; Prof. Gongqiu ZHANG will briefly introduce MAT-Financial Mathematics.

Mathematics and Applied Mathematics
Programme
数学是现代科学技术的基础,在自然科学、社会科学、工程技术等领域发挥着至关重要的作用。数学不仅是描述自然现象的语言,同时也是解决实际问题的核心工具。
本专业旨在培养学生扎实的理论功底及应用数学解决问题的能力。专业课程不仅教授数学基本理论,还将训练学生在商业、金融、工程、物理、生命科学及社会科学领域内应用数学模型和计算方法来解决实际问题。在本专业课程的前一年,学生将学习数学和一般理工科的基础科目。在第二年起,学生将会学习数学专业的核心课程以及所选专修方向的特色课程。本专业为希望开阔视野或在数学各专业范围内深造的学生提供若干关于数学最新领域的高级课程,本科同学可以选读研究生课程。
本专业在偏微分方程、应用数学及理论数学领域拥有世界级的教师团队,数学专业教师们热心教学,关注同学学术成长。在授课内容上,专业有着丰富的选修课程,可以选择学院开设的人工智能、金融、物理科学等应用领域,同学可以根据自己的兴趣进行选修,方便同学毕业后的升学及就业。在能力培养方面,数学专业更加注重逻辑思维、分析能力、量化推理能力的培养,这是本专业最大的优势特色之一。毕业后,本专业学生的就业、升学前景广阔,有许多有趣且回报丰厚的工作可供选择。此外,学院正积极开展与香港中文大学合作的本硕项目,学生也可发挥本专业优势,跨专业申请如统计学、计算机、运筹学、数据科学、金融以及经济学等多领域的研究生项目。许多学生获得名校青睐,进入斯坦福大学、哥伦比亚大学、卡耐基梅隆大学、普渡大学、佐治亚理工学院等顶尖学府攻读博士学位。
A. 理论数学
学习数学不同领域的基础理论,包括代数、几何、拓扑、分析及概率论,为有志于数学研究的同学打好数学基础。
B. 应用数学
学习数学的基础理论并侧重于应用方法,例如概率论,数学建模,数值方法和运筹学等,运用计算机和数学软件解决实际问题。该专修方向有着丰富的选修课程。
C. 金融数学
系统学习数学及金融知识并侧重于现代金融中常用的数学工具,包括数学建模、理论分析、数值计算等定量分析方法。
Mathematics is the foundation of modern science and technology and plays a vital role in different fields, like natural science, social science, and engineering technology. Mathematics is not only a language for describing natural phenomena, but also a core tool for solving practical problems.
The major of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics aims to cultivate students' solid theoretical foundation and ability to apply mathematics to solve problems. Professional courses teach basic theory and train students to apply mathematical models and computational methods to solve practical business, finance, engineering, physics, life science, and social science. Students will study mathematics and some fundamental science and engineering subjects during the first year. Then, they will study the core mathematics courses and specialized courses of the chosen branch from the second year. This major provides advanced courses in the latest mathematical fields for students who wish to broaden their horizons or pursue advanced studies. Undergraduate students can choose to take graduate courses.
The major has a world-class faculty in partial differential equations, applied mathematics, and pure mathematics. Teachers in mathematics major are enthusiastic about teaching and pay attention to students' academic growth. The major has a wealth of elective courses in terms of teaching content. The college offered application fields such as artificial intelligence, finance, and physical science. Students can choose elective courses according to their interests, which is convenient for them to further their studies and employment after graduation. Paying more attention to cultivating logical thinking, analytical ability, and quantitative reasoning ability is one of the significant advantages of mathematics major. After graduation, students of this major have broad prospects for further education and employment, which means many interesting and rewarding jobs to be chosen. In addition, the college is actively developing undergraduate and master programs in cooperation with the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Students can take advantage of this major to apply for postgraduate programs in various fields such as statistics, computer science, operational research, data science, finance, and economics. Many students have received PhD offers from Stanford University, Columbia University, Carnegie Mellon University, Purdue University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and other prestigious schools.
A. Pure Mathematics
To learn fundamental mathematical theories in different fields, including algebra, geometry, topology, analysis, and probability theory and build a solid mathematical foundation for students who are interested in mathematical research.
B. Applied Mathematics
To learn fundamental mathematics theories and focus on applied methods, such as probability theory, mathematical modeling, numerical methods, operations research. Use computers and mathematical software to solve practical problems. There are lots of elective courses in this stream.
C. Financial Mathematics
To systematically learn mathematical and financial knowledge and focus on mathematical tools commonly used in modern finance, including quantitative analysis methods such as mathematical modeling, theoretical analysis, and numerical calculation.
