Long Feng Science Forum Seminar Series | Seminar #140

Dear All,

You are cordially invited to the 140th seminar of Long Feng Science Forum Seminar Series. It will be delivered by Prof. Teck-Peng LOH (Nanyang Technological University) at 4:00 pm on August 22 (Thursday). This seminar will discuss "Development of Green and Sustainable Technologies Toolbox and Their Applications".

Seminar Information

Time & Date: 4:00 - 5:00 PM on August 22 (Thursday), Beijing Time

Venue: Room 610, Teaching C

Speaker: Prof. Teck-Peng LOH, Nanyang Technological University

Host: Prof. Henry N. C. WONG, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen

Abstract:

For over three decades, our research has been dedicated to building a comprehensive toolbox of green and sustainable technologies. Inspired by the practical methods used in nature to construct complex molecules in aqueous media, our team has focused on developing biocompatible reactions that operate under mild conditions—such as room temperature, neutral pH, and without the need for metals or catalysts—while maximizing atom economy. In the first part of my talk, I will highlight our advances in using water not just as a solvent, but as an active reagent and promoter in various organic transformations. I will also discuss several bio-inspired organic reactions that we have developed. The second part of my talk will explore the practical applications of these methods, including their role in the development of new biologics and in plastic recycling. Here, I will demonstrate how application-driven research has led us to innovate in the creation of immolative and reversible bonds, as well as the development of novel catalysts for bond cleavage.

Biography

Professor Teck-Peng LOH is a Distinguished University Professor at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore and a leading expert in green chemistry. His outstanding scientific contributions have earned him fellowships in the Singapore National Academy of Science, the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. In 2018, he received the President’s Science Award (individual), Singapore’s highest research honor, in recognition of his work in green and sustainable chemistry. With over 475 publications, an h-index of 86, and more than 25,000 citations, Professor Loh’s scholarly impact is profound. He earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University under Nobel Laureate E. J. Corey and has been instrumental in advancing chemistry and Biological Chemistry and former associate chair (Research and Graduate studies) at the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

His research centers on green synthesis, bio-inspired transformations, and innovative synthetic methodologies for complex organic molecules with notable biological activities. In addition to his research, he holds over 10 patents and serves on the editorial boards of leading journals, including the Journal of Organic Chemistry and Green Synthesis and Catalysis.
