Host: Prof. Henry N. C. WONG, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen
Abstract:
For over three decades, our research has been dedicated to building a comprehensive toolbox of green and sustainable technologies. Inspired by the practical methods used in nature to construct complex molecules in aqueous media, our team has focused on developing biocompatible reactions that operate under mild conditions—such as room temperature, neutral pH, and without the need for metals or catalysts—while maximizing atom economy. In the first part of my talk, I will highlight our advances in using water not just as a solvent, but as an active reagent and promoter in various organic transformations. I will also discuss several bio-inspired organic reactions that we have developed. The second part of my talk will explore the practical applications of these methods, including their role in the development of new biologics and in plastic recycling. Here, I will demonstrate how application-driven research has led us to innovate in the creation of immolative and reversible bonds, as well as the development of novel catalysts for bond cleavage.
