Foreword
Chen Xia is the silence seldom found in this noisy world. Graduating from St. Martin's College of Art where she studied fashion design, she subsequently founded her own design studio to continue her work.
Chen Xia and I got to know each other ten years ago in rural Guizhou, where she arrived to explore local handicrafts and plant dyeing after quitting her job. During the ten years since, she has been ceaselessly researching and creating, neither selling any of her work formally nor exhibiting them to the public.
"Fabric" runs through Chen Xia's life like a road. It is also seemingly a black hole, attracting her "unthinking" devotion without limit. Why "unthinking"? Even Chen Xia herself feels that this kind of creative behavior is approaching foolishness, simply go all-in, no idea who it is for or what comes next. That is, just do.
The life we've grown accustomed to is often broken up by "uncertainty," just like the epidemic bestowed upon us by the new virus. Yet it is precisely the accompanying self-doubt and introspection from which a precious life-force emerges anew.
This exhibition might not have taken place without such a moment of doubt. I think this is an interesting "window of opportunity" for the artist, and for us, to safely travel through the black hole of creation and get a glimpse of the "Everything" hiding inside --- a fantastic universe brimming with change and wonder.
In wool felt, Chen Xia found the ancient fabric she had always hoped to work with. A non-woven material with production methods going back to the ancient Roman times, wool felt is a matted material with a soft yet rigid feel, with good heat retention, water resistance, and fire resistance.
This exhibition presents 21 works by Chen Xia made during the epidemic, using a machine she specially built for the purpose of realizing her ideal artistic impulses. Each and every piece holds all of everything hiding inside, and certainly a different appearance in the heart of every beholder.
We invite everyone to this exhibition to see, to touch, to connect, to explore EVERYTHING hidden inside.
