Teacher Talks: The Power of Praise

2016-02-19 YCIS Beijing YCISBeijing

In a new series titled 'Teacher Talks,' YCIS Beijing’s experienced teachers share their education philosophies with our community to promote a greater understanding of commonly overlooked problems related to nurturing a child’s development.
In this edition, Jennifer Mills, Primary School Curriculum Co-ordinator, explains the benefits that correctly praising a child can bring to their behavioral development.

"Praising our children is something that we all do every day. However, using praise in the right way can be an even more powerful tool in helping your child develop healthy self-esteem. Praise acts as a motivator for children to want to continue with the positive behaviour they were praised for. It also helps children feel good about themselves and boosts their confidence.

Descriptive praise, the most powerful form of praise, is when you tell your child what specific behaviour or action of theirs that you like, e.g. 'I love the way you shared your Lego.' When children receive praise for demonstrating good behaviour, they are likely to want to keep behaving well. Give children verbal praise about what they are doing well as this praise can encourage your child to try harder in the future.

Some children, especially those who are less confident, need more praise and encouragement than others. Show your child you’re excited and proud of their behavior by letting them know and you’ll be rewarded with a self-confident child with positive behaviour."

Jennifer was born in Sydney and has taught and travelled extensively. Teaching posts have included her home town of Sydney, London, Dublin, Greece, Papua New Guinea, Qatar and, of course, Beijing. She holds a Masters of International Education, a Diploma of Teaching, and a Graduate Diploma of Expressive and Performing Arts.
