GARDEN-LLERY
After multi-period reconnaissance and brainstorming of the project site, KMCM holds that The Canton Place is not merely a business format affiliated to the international community, but a "destination of culture and social contact" for people of different ages and under diverse backgrounds. Apart from the renovation of the site facilities, the ascension and renovation lays more emphasis on how to bring about more possibilities for the operation of culture, art, food, gathering as well as other activities in the landscape, integrate a variety of usage scenarios and let communication and interaction takes place naturally.
Without influencing the renovation of community residents and commercial operations, KMCM and the owners have studied and worked out the key areas for landscape renovation and ascension, e.g. the central garden, the east entrance, and the outside stall area of commerce, and remould the elegant and pleasant urban art garden by means of "Natural Shape Nature", natural vocabulary and lines, and artistic design in the concrete space scene design.

East Entrance in Status Quo and Design Renderings
As the east entrance of the main guest-welcoming plaza with a stretch of spaces, it is a vital image interface for the city and the arrival of drop-off guests. The porch in status quo is set off against the trees on both sides of it, leaving a unique memory point of the space. The design retains the original spatial logic framework of the plaza, porch, waterscape and trees in the site, simplifies the complexity, remodels the gallery frame and waterscape on the original site, and enhances the atmosphere of space and night view with simple and direct design language and refined design quality, giving a brand-new entry experience and an entrance image.

The 30-meter-long mirrored waterscape reflects the shadows of trees dancing in the breeze, naturally integrating the city with the garden.
The unique water curtain in the center of the waterscape shifts the attention to the central garden and consciously forms a dynamic tension in the mirror pool.
The 30-meter-long mirrored waterscape under the porch, which is newly renovated, reflects the shadows of trees dancing in the breeze, naturally integrating the city with the garden. The waterscape is cleverly provided with an inward and orderly water curtain, which echoes the movement and quietness, and directs the visitors' eyes to the central garden with the rendering of lighting.
Deliberately creating a composition of straight lines is like opening the curtain of the landscape.
The path from the end of this waterscape, which passes through the porch of the east entrance, to the central garden is blocked by greening and hard platforms. To preserve the trees in status quo, the design skillfully opens up a butterfly-shaped bridge on the green island along the original coconut groves, which meanders to the central garden, connects with the central garden, and integrates with the artistic sculpture.

The original central circular square is the open green space of the park surrounded by the commercial outside corridors and becomes the unique landscape resource of the project. It is not merely a stroll space for the citizens in the surrounding communities at their leisure, but a business premise for commercial activities and festival celebrations. The design team re-plans the central plaza in view of the site attributes and operational requirements, allocates the hard space based on the needs of commercial activities, enriches the space structure of the central garden by introducing artistic flowerbed, themed sculpture and interactive waterscape, viewing platform and leisure green corridor, enhances the social attributes and stroll environment of the project, form a garden both for recreation and leisure, and create a brand-new destination of humanistic care and social contact.

Artistic framework of a set of butterfly dances in the woods, flower islands and waterscape
KMCM has renovated the middle and lower spaces along the trees in status quo, and set up streamlined flower islands through natural vocabulary. The flower islands are provided with nectar plants (such as Eupatorium fortunei Turcz., Asclepias curassavica, Rondeletia odorata, Verbena officinalis L., etc.) that attract butterflies to offer a natural habitat for butterflies to feed and reproduce. A set of large-scale art sculptures carrying the theme of "breaking cocoons and turning feathers" on flower islands, depicting the scene of butterflies dancing trippingly among flowers, becomes the artistic landmark of the central garden.
Setting off the tree shadow and outlining the shape of flower islands with low gray scale and pixelated ecological pavage.
The interactive water curtain of the art sculpture has become a favorite playground for children, which is also a strategy of cooling down to cope with the hot climate in Guangzhou City.
There is a dense "forest belt" around the central plaza in status quo in the site. Tree-lined trees have become the preferred place to stay in summer and the main ring road for both commercial customers and residents. KMCM retains all the trees in the site in the light of local conditions, re-plans the space under the forest, transforms vegetation by introducing leisure functions, making it a comfortable and natural green corridor for rest under the forest that adapts to Lingnan climate and thus enhancing its popularity and operational space.
A group of circular pools of trees embedded under the forest have become open spaces in order to improve the recreation of the green ring and the diversity of plants.
GARDEN
All the trees in the site have been retained in this case. The design of plants lays emphasis on collocation and matching of the middle and lower plants. Naturalistic collocation is used for planting design, which distinguishes the previous single planting pattern of commercial space. In the planting frame of the green ring of "forests" in status quo, ornamental grass with rich colors sets the keynote for the flower island under the forest. In the design, the dominant perennial shrubs and evergreen colored plants (85%) and seasonal flowers (15%) changed irregularly according to festivals and activities jointly create an all-season garden of flowers that remains green throughout the year and clusters a variety of flowers, which can not only become a popular science garden for children to learn, but also display flower scenes in different seasons.

The butterfly-shaped garden attracts a large number of butterflies to dance trippingly among the flowers as scheduled.
Open up the vision of the middle and lower layers, under the tree-lined space, and create the atmosphere of green ring full of ecological greenery combined with the perennial flowering plants and vivid and light ornamental grass in full consideration of the four-season changes of color and texture; plants and popular science signs in combination make it the place for visit and tour of green ring, nature education and community participation.
GATHERING
There is a circle of ring-shaped shops around the central garden, with gross building area of 80,000 square meters for business operations, bringing together numerous international high-end brands and gourmet dishes. Foreign consuls reside in the community houses, including the The Canton Place Mansion, taking on the scene of the center where elegant urban life and fashion meet.
To upgrade the environmental quality and update the old facilities, KMCM connects the north-south passage with the garden based on the status quo analysis and operation requirements, in a bid to make the moving lines clear. Moreover, it integrates the renovated and promoted commercial outdoor space with the central garden, which is more in line with the constantly upgraded operation environment at the moment.

Since its opening, The Canton Place has scored a stunning success. The challenge for the project team is how to make it become a brighter, more pleasant and more popular consumption destination after ascension and renovation on the basis of the status quo. In terms of renovation design based on the status quo, KMCM endeavors to grasp the site conditions truthfully in the course of design, which will, while guaranteeing the implementable scheme, intervene and promote the project value with accurate and appropriate design.
KMCM studies the status quo of the site in collaboration with Party A's design management team and architectural design consultant team, e.g. the arrival interface, pedestrian moving lines, activity space, commercial atmosphere, etc., and brings forward four renovation strategies as well as the scheme of site renovation:
1) Collocation of moving lines: Get through the breakpoints in the streamline, connect the flow of people from the north and south entrances to the central garden to enhance the accessibility of the central garden, and emphatically create a sequence of east entrance with the temperament of an art gallery, with a view to create a landmark gateway for the project facing the city;
2) Reshaping of forest ring: Retain the "forest ring" in status quo and re-plan the space under the forest with the thematic flower glasses embedded, making it a comfortable and natural green corridor under the forest for rest in line with the climate of Lingnan;
3) Art landmark: Re-plan the central plaza based on operational needs by introducing artistic flower beds, sculptures and interactive waterplay areas to form the focus of a new central garden;
4)Quality upgrade of commerce: redesigns the existing outside stall area of catering, expand the outside stall area and effectively lower the difficulty of maintenance and management.
